Basement Leaking Explained: Where is the Water Coming From?

Have you ever stepped into your basement and wondered, where is this water coming from? We are here to explain the 3 most common reasons why your basement may have moisture issues, funky odors, or even mold.

Poor Drainage Systems:
Footing drains are commonly placed around the outside perimeter of the home and lay along the exterior of the footing. After the drain is put into place, the soils around the outside of your home are pushed back over to cover. There are many things that could go wrong with the installation of the footing drain that include:
1. Blockage at the end of the drain will prevent water from properly flowing.
2. Drains often clog over time as the water brings in sediment and silt, leading to drainage failure.
3. Footing Drains are commonly installed too high or not connected as a continuous loop.
4. Foundation damage could occur if there happens to be a clogged footage drain, water will pool up around the foundation, ruining the structure of the home.

Hydrostatic Pressure:
The space surrounding your basement is full of soil that will often retain water. When it rains, hydrostatic pressure causes these soils to push that water and moisture into your basement. Your basement acts as a hole in the ground lined with a structure made of concrete. This material is very porous and will form cracks, joints, and holes over time.

Settling Dirt Around Your Foundation:
When a home is initially built, loose soil or “backfill” is used to fill the extra space surrounding your home and its foundation. When this material settles into the ground it will allow water to easily flow near your home’s structure causing water and foundational issues.
When it is dry, this soil will shrink away from your foundation, forming spaces for water to easily flow right next to your home. It is important to surround your home with dirt, due to the fact that soil leaves a lot of room for water damage.
